Alcohol Ignition Interlock

The Alcohol Ignition Interlock program was put into effect in 2009 and allows eligible DWI offenders to have ignition interlock devices installed in their vehicles to ensure they are driving without consuming alcohol. The Ignition Interlock program is mandatory in many DWI cases and can be a positive thing in certain instances. The ignition interlock device sits under the console or dashboard of your car and is connected to a blow tube that looks very much like a cell phone. Before you can start the car, you will need to blow into the tube to check your blood alcohol content level. In general, the ignition interlock device acts as your own personal breathalyzer that you must use before being able to drive. Your car’s ignition will not start until there is no alcohol detected from the driver’s breath. While you are driving, you will need to continue to blow into the tube every 15 minutes.

How Much Does the Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device Cost?

If you are convicted for a DWI, you are looking at several fines and fees in order to have your license reinstated. The Alcohol Ignition interlock program is another fee on top of the already looming fees including the DWI fine (ranging from $300 to $3,000) and the $680 license reinstatement fee. In general, you are looking at an installation cost of $90 to $100 for the alcohol ignition interlock as well as around $60 to $125 per month for maintenance.

Facing Alcohol Ignition Interlock?

The alcohol ignition interlock program is not for everyone. You could be looking at this mandatory device in the following instances:

  • Restricted license holders – if you hold a restricted license, you may drive anywhere as long as the alcohol ignition interlock device is properly installed and you are using it as required
  • Limited license holders – if you hold a limited license, you may be able to drive to work, school and to treatment programs as long as the alcohol ignition interlock device is properly installed and you are using it as required.
